Summer of Action 2024 (& Mahalo UAF!)

Updated: Oct 7

So many things in Summer 2024. Some key highlights:

‘A’OLE RIMPAC!

25,000 troops from 23 countries (including Israel, France and others) plan to bomb Hawai’i’s ocean and destroy our beaches and lands, threatening our communities with an enormous war presence. We say ‘A’OLE — NO!!! Our youth, elders and makua will be standing strong with creative action & info!

‘A’OLE TMT! Protect Mauna Kea!!

The National Science Foundation (NSF) has granted funding to fill the deficit of the Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT) so that it can destroy the North Plateau of our most sacred mountain, Mauna Kea, potentially poison our water, and threaten the lives of the many kūpuna (elders) and other kia’i (guardians) who will stand against it 100%. However, it must first compete with the Giant Magellan Telescope (GMT) in Chile, and manufacture a false image of “progress” toward consent of Kanaka Maoli, which does not exist. We will be fighting on many fronts to counter this narrative, spread the understanding of what Consent really means, build community in key places to counter misinformation and strengthen solidarity, and fight for the protection of sacred places everywhere.

Protect Women’s Reproductive Practices!

Birthing and other cultural reproductive practices are under attack in Hawai’i due to Act 32 (2019), which went into full effect last year. This law changes HRS 457 to require licensure (which is not attainable in Hawai’i) for anything considered “midwifery” under the law’s horrific terms, which include giving “advice” or “care” to any pregnant, birthing or “interpartum” (ie any) woman. This criminalizes many cultural practices. Not only are birthing practices criminalized, but many other areas of assistance that traditional midwives provide, including ceremonial and relief work, could be prosecuted as well. We plan to build community to respond to this threat on every level.

Stay tuned for updates!
